Imagine it with 40K rental miles. A friend of mine had a rental Rio in FL lacking cruise control.
I usually rent a higher class, a little extra expense can cancel out some torture . “Premium” seems to be a safe bet in most fleets.

The Rio I had also lacked cruise control. That 150 mile interstate drive was hellacious.

I rented a Forte from Hertz a few years ago. Don’t remember the mileage, but it lacked cruise control and got real squirrell y above 75, which is really not what I needed for a road trip.

I am surprised these low spec cars exist, one would think they harm brand/model equity - would you buy one after renting one like that?
For some time, I have rented “premium” or above, the cost is usually marginal, and you’ll generally get something decent. This is always on my dime though, and I know some employers prohibit it.

I’d definitely prefer for rentals to be a way to showcase a brand’s cars, but I understand trying to make it as cheap as possible (to Kia’s credit, while the Forte I rented sucked, I was left with a fairly positive impression after renting a Soul). When I’ve been paying for myself, upgrading does seem more expensive, and the cars seem somewhat lackluster at every price point (it would of course help if you could actually pick with car you are getting rather than “or similar”).
